Doug Fiedler began
his career in hospitality in 1979 with Marriott International.
Throughout the first eight years of his career, Doug
quickly advanced through seven kitchen and catering
management positions in the Chicago Downtown Marriott
Hotel. Doug was then promoted to Director of Catering
at the Schaumburg Marriott Hotel, and then quickly thereafter
to Director of Catering at the Minneapolis Marriott
City Center.
In 1991, Doug was
promoted to Marriott Headquarters to assume the responsibility
for catering sales and operations for all brands, worldwide.
This role took Doug to over 40 new hotel openings and
takeovers, all over the world. He had the opportunity
to bring Marriott's spirit to serve to these new hotels,
he also had the opportunity to assimilate different
cultures into effective teams that met goals and delivered
quality service to guests.
Additionally in
this role, Doug inspired, created and delivered many
training courses that were designed to increase sales,
improve food and beverage knowledge, enhance creativity
and presentation, and build service skills. His training
audiences included all levels of Marriott management,
ranging from General Managers to line level employees.
Over the 12 years in this role, Doug trained thousands
of Marriott associates around the world. It was in this
role that Doug was first exposed to development of key
performance indicators, or KPIs.
In 2000, Doug was
promoted to The Marketplace by Marriott and given the
responsibility for Product Development and Marketing.
In this role, Doug expanded his food and beverage expertise
into purchasing, strategic procurement and further development
of KPIs. He worked extensively with the Marriott Brand
Teams on new product development and marketing The Marketplace
to Marriott franchisees. Doug also participated in developing
Avendra's business plan, establishing KPIs, and led
the development of the name, logo, web site, collateral,
trade advertising, and press relations as Vice President,
Marketing. Avendra is the hospitality industry's leading
procurement services provider. It was formed in 2001
with traditional competitors including Marriott, Hyatt,
Fairmont, InterContinental, and ClubCorp.
In 2004, Doug was
promoted to Vice President, Account Management for Avendra.
The Account Management group is responsible for revenue
generation and client satisfaction. Over the years in
this role, Doug and his group increased Avendra's purchasing
power from $1.1B to $2.3B by using KPIs and collaborative
goal setting with clients and suppliers. Doug helped
create and deliver management tools, numerous KPIs,
and systems reporting to support the new business. He
also designed and delivered several training courses
for new associates.
In December 2006,
Doug created his own consulting business specializing
in strategy development, people development, and process
analysis. Today, his clients benefit from his hospitality
industry expertise with customized strategic plans,
specialized training development and delivery, key performance
indicator (KPI) development, food and beverage creativity,
catering and event management support, and customer
service training. His clients include The Ritz-Carlton
Hotel Company, Great Wolf Resorts, Marriott International,
Phillips Foods, Foster's Wine Estates Americas, Jackson
Dawson Communications, and Mercedes-Benz USA.
Doug's projects
have included coaching executives and job seekers, assessing
quality of food, evaluating labor cost, writing service
standards and job descriptions, developing communication
processes from Sales to Service, writing Service Standards
workshops, developing catering product knowledge workshop,
building new meeting products, managing pre-opening
activities and purchases, and development of a Food
School for General Managers, among other projects.
Doug is a graduate of Michigan
State University's School of Hospitality and is active
in his family's church, his children's schools, and
Boy Scouts of America.
